My name is Aelfgifu and I am an avid traveller, chronic over-planner and occasional terrible decision-maker.
I started this blog because I kept finding the same thing whenever I planned a trip – there is plenty of information about where to go but less about what it was actually like to go there, especially from non-perfect people such as myself.
What happens when the plan goes wrong? Is that attraction genuinely worth the queue? What do you wish somebody had told you before you went? That’s the sort of information I want to share.
I’ve travelled through Europe, Asia, North America, Central America and South America, including destinations such as Mongolia, China, Morocco, Guatemala and El Salvador.

Over the years I have done a number of trips as a solo female as well a with friends and family. I have always been frustrated with the lack of information available online, especially for those traveling on a budget or solo. On this website I hope to help those who would like any tips and tricks I have accumulated over the years and things you might not have thought about before planning a trip.
I’m particularly interested in budget-conscious travel: finding ways to experience somewhere properly without spending money unnecessarily and that doesn’t necessarily mean choosing the absolute cheapest option every time as sometimes paying a little more saves you hours of misery and sometimes the “must-do” experience simply isn’t worth the price – I’m here to help work out which is which.
You’ll notice that I don’t plaster my face across the site (and the closest you ever get is a photo of my hand holding a sherbet lemon in various different locations) and that’s deliberate: Aelfgifu Travels is anonymous by choice because I want the focus to be on the travel rather than on me.
So if you’re interested in reading about places as I experience them – the practical realities, the unexpected frustrations and the moments that don’t photograph well but stay with you – this blog is for you.
